Being honest with yourself is one of the hardest things to do. It is so important, and we should all strive to always be honest with ourselves. You may ask why? Well, think it this way, if you can’t be honest with yourself, you will never find contentedness and you can’t be your true self. In addition, you cannot work on improving yourself which leads to happiness.
I made a comment this past week regarding the pandemic with all of us being in lockdown, spending more time at home and more time on our hands. ‘We have all gotten to know ourselves better.’ Now this can be a good thing or not, depends on how you choose to look at it. Also, most of us have developed new habits, again, good or not, depends on how you choose to look at it.
This starts innocent, noticing things you are doing, but brush them off, or try to justify them. Over time, this starts to become a habit, and that’s when it can become a problem. Over time, we figure out that instead of thinking “this isn’t like me” or “why am I feeling this way”, you will come up with a reason as to why – denial or justification.
The first step in being able to be honest with yourself, acknowledge it, be aware of your thoughts and your inner dialogue. Mindfulness and mindful thinking play an important role in this. You can’t change your thoughts or your self talk until you’re aware of them. Self realization is another great tool you can use to your advantage.
Now this is usually not something that happens overnight, takes time to even realize you need to make some changes. This is a process and only you can do this, the work is on you to do. Everyone has their own way of dealing, your process is your own and do not disregard the way other process theirs.
Once you are aware and accept of what you’re telling yourself, you can begin to change it. Then it is a matter of creating better habits, and more positive self talk. The better you feel about yourself, the easier it becomes to be honest with yourself! Now this is usually not an overnight change, some changes in behaviour take time, lots of time. Be gentle and kind to yourself, these habits did not start overnight and majority not consciously.
When you start to change up your habits for better ones, you will feel better, and in the long run, it will truly help you. It is amazing how well you get to know yourself when you can become aware of your thoughts, your self talk, and be true to yourself with how you’re feeling. It can be very empowering!
Remember that being honest with yourself is on-going, lifelong process. The world change, we change, other change – always change going on so be open to that change and be aware of what you need to change in yourself.
Being honest and true to yourself, so many benefits and a happier life is out there waiting for you!
