Saag Paneer - Indian Cuisine

We are so fortunate to have Upasana and Lokesh here in England as friends to help us navigate the world of authentic Indian food!! In this video, they show us how to make Saag Paneer, which is a wonderful, vegetarian cheese and spinach dish which will please the pickiest of eaters!

  1. 300 gms spinach leaves, washed.

  2. 200 gms paneer

  3. 0.5 medium onion (diced), 1 inch ginger (chopped small)

  4. Optional - 1 green chilli

  5. 2 tbsp - Vegetable oil or Clarified butter (Ghee)

  6. 0.25 tsp each - Turmeric powder, chilli powder, garam masala ( available at Amazon UK or Indian grocery stores)

  7. 0.25 tsp mustard seeds


  1. Boil washed spinach - minimal water as Spinach has high water content.

  2. Blend spinach in a mixer into a thick puree

  3. Cut paneer into 1 cm cubes

  4. microwave paneer cubes to soften them - 2-3 minutes covered ( helps soften paneer and makes it taste better when cooked)

  5. In a pan, add oil or Ghee

  6. Add mustard seeds and let splutter

  7. Add onion and ginger and saute until golden brown. Add green chilli (optional).

  8. Add salt to taste, turmeric, Garam masala, and chilli powder

  9. Add paneer to the pan, mix well, and cook on low heat covered for 5 minutes.

  10. Add blended spinach , mix well, cover and cook on low heat for 10 minutes on low heat – stir occasionally to even out cooking.

  11. If gravy is too thick, can add little water to adjust consistency.

Serve with Rice or Naan bread.
